People who blast students taking student loans today when they say in my day, we paid our way through college. um, inflation I Did an exercise on this in class once when I first went to college, tuition at the University I went to had just gone up to $189 a quarter for full full-time Studio The most expensive textbook was a chem book for $35 Outrageous. I Had a studio apartment that I paid $95 a month for. So we collected these statistics and we looked at minimum wage at the time and we calculated out how many hours you would have to work to pay those College expenses and you could do it on a part-time job.
We then went back and plugged in current expenses on all of those. Divided those by the number of hours to work. Minimum wage today would have to be $125 an hour. at least that's way through college the same way someone did decades ago.
That's beyond ridiculous.
I call a bit of bS on this …. I went to college starting in 1987 … my text books were already about 75 each took 4-5 classes a semester and min wage was 3.65 hr .. I would have had to work 53 hrs a week to pay just tuition and housing. Notice how he did not include food, transportation gas / elec phone
My tuition private school was 6k a year public was 2 k a year my last semester at public was would have been 2k 1/2 a year 1987-1993 … so he might be 10-15 years older than me I think it would have been still very tough to do on part time hrs .
Says more about the cost of college than the wages being paid. What young people today seem to not understand is that when you are young, that is the time to live frugally and develop your skills so you can achieve an ever increasing income. Starbucks, iPhone, gaming consoles, eating out, door dash, car loan, single-occupant dwelling are all things that preclude you from saving enough money to afford the things that are truly important. I would also encourage anyone who is in college for anything other than a STEM degree to seriously reconsider your choices and pursue a trade.
I worked two jobs in college and was able to graduate debt free back in 2013. If you work hard and get good grades, scholarships get handed out like candy too.
Universities have an over inflated opinion of themselves. They see themselves as "Gate Keepers".
Colleges know the GOVERNMENT hands out school loans and they are MILKING IT for all it's worth.
While I agree with his point, and there are certainly places this is true, the average student would need minimum wage to be about $30/hour. Still far from achievable but not quite as dramatic.
You guys are not factoring in supply and demand. What was the population back then and what is it now? There will have to be haves and have nots due to not enough materials or slave available to everyone.
I realized that I could pay for books and food working while in school. That was about it.
That's what a 2-3% inflation rate over a lifetime gets ya, poor
Quit subsidizing college, quit telling kids they have to go to college to be successful. Demand goes down, college doesn’t have the leverage of the government paying and prices go down…. Pretty simple
Easy fix just bump minimum wage up to $150 a hour. There problem solved.
And look at what today's university's have become.
Yes, and it was the fault of federally guaranteed student loans. We KNOW this. Its a direct correlation between federal loan guarantees and increased tuition. Blame the government stop letting them get involved in shit the fu k up everything they touch
This government is absolutely ruining this country. WE need to stop them now before it gets worse.
So what? I still shouldn't have to pay back YOUR loan….
Sure. Right about the time university and Healthcare spread their legs for government involvement.
Its not that minimum wage would be 125$, its that you need to earn that much per hour to afford that lifeatyle
FYI, Not everyone needs to go to college, Plumbers and Electricians and Carpenters and Welders etc. "willing to work" make bank.
You can go to community College for 2 years and get all your basic courses.
You can join the military and take classes at night on base for pennies plus gi bill plus the chance to save. You can get pretty far down the road with that plan.
The problem is that college professors make to much … almost $200,000 in Ivry league colleges… causing the tuition to skyrocket…and the professors are so delusional liberal and against capitalism that they produce kids who don't know how to make money and are in favor of socialism
That was the govements plan all along this is called a long con . Look how much they have been pushing you have to go to college how you wont get anywhere in life without it all for you to be cought with a life time debt
I paid off my student loans. It took 10 years.
Have the government get involved in student loans they said. Do you people see why I don't want government involved in anything now?
