You're probably thinking, why in the world would they do that? The Church was concerned that the disclosure of the assets would lead to negative consequences in the light of the size of the church's portfolio. They're worried that they made too much money. And what's the punishment for hiding 32 billion from the public? 5 million.
The SEC fined them 5 million dollars.

Everyone in the church knew they had a lot. What you don’t know is the church secretly spends billions every year around the world helping people. Last time anyone heard was when Haiti was almost completely wiped out. The church almost single handedly built the county back with absolutely no mention. That’s because they don’t flaunt their good deeds.
